Prior to uploading your manuscript, read the information below; doing so will save you time, money and potential confusion once you begin your submission.
Publication options
You will be given two different publication options when you submit your manuscript as noted below.
1. Traditional - This option will suit the needs of most every student. Choosing this option prevents you from incurring an additional publication fee and allows you to receive royalties on copies sold by UMI (as noted below).
2. Open Access - You are already given open access to your manuscript for free by the Clemson University Library. Choosing this publication option, while permissible by the Graduate School, will result in an additional $95 fee from UMI.
After selecting a publication option, you will be given the ability to select publishing restrictions (embargoes). The Graduate School permits proprietary issue-based embargoes on student manuscripts of up to one year in length. However, the embargo must be approved by the Dean of the Graduate School. Contact the Manuscript Review Office at manuscriptreview-l@clemson.edu for information about the appropriate steps that you should take if you wish to pursue an embargo.
Required Fees
You will be required to pay an archiving fee—$65 for a dissertation, $55 for a thesis—via a credit or debit card during the upload process. You pay this fee only once, even if you have to re-submit a revised version of your manuscript. Your card will be charged upon completing your initial submission, but will not be charged again if you have to resubmit.
Bound Copies
The Graduate School no longer requires that you purchase any bound copies. Your department may require that you do, though. Check the list of departments to see if you are required to order a bound copy.
Please note: bound copies from UMI do not look like the bound copies previously produced by Clemson (UMI copies have green covers, title on the front only instead of the front and spine, cannot be printed in color and some other differences). Some students who have ordered manuscripts from UMI were not completely satisfied with the end result. If you would like to have your manuscript bound at a different location to ensure your satisfaction, and you have approval from your department, feel free to do so.
Royalties
Each student who submits a manuscript on UMI is giving UMI non-exclusive rights to offer copies for sale. Students selecting the traditional publishing option whose manuscripts are sold through UMI receive royalty payments of 10% on all sales.
Italics in Title
If you need to italicize any text in your manuscript’s title when entering it into the title field on UMI (foreign words or scientific names), use HTML tags to do so. To use these tags, insert "<i>" in front of the word to be italicized and "</i>" after the word. It will look like this: "The title of my manuscript has an <i>italic</i> word in it." The actual print out will look like this: "The title of my manuscript has an italic word in it."
Thank you for reading the above information thoroughly. If you are generally comfortable with computers and online transactions, you can start the upload process by going to the UMI Upload Site and clicking on "Submit my dissertation/thesis." Directions are provided as you progress through the screens.
Very detailed, step-by-step instructions are also available for your use.
