| February 14-16, 2007 | Clemson University Celebrates Humanities in Modern Life |
Clemson will return to the roots of all universities in a
three-day celebration of the humanities, beginning Feb. 14. Clemson University's College of Architecture, Arts and Humanities (AAH) wil explore the role of humanities in a series of events designed to recognize and celebrate the classic academic disciplines that reach back to Plato. "Celebrating the Humanities at Clemson University" will look at the modern function of languages, philosophy, history, religion and other disciplines that study the human condition," said Jan Schach, dean of AAH College. "We live in an increasingly polarized culture, where words are massaged by spin doctors and critical decisions are made along party lines," Schach said. "In such a climate, what is the role of the academy? How do we engage in important issues? How do we encourage open debate?" The celebration includes:
"The humanities remind us of the noble beginnings of all universities, but it's important to remember they also represent one of the most exciting and interesting paths for students today," Schach said. "We're on the brink of profound changes in the United States and the world. Cultural literacy, analytical skills, critical thinking - all components of an education in the humanities - are skills that will be essential for our great leaders and thinkers of tomorrow." |

From 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. in the Carillon Garden, you’ll find authentic Indian food and beverages, mehndi (temporary henna tattooing) and handicrafts such as bangles, jewelry, statues, apparel, accessories and more. There will be kite-flying to celebrate the spirit of the day, and folk art performances. Colloquium: Department of Physics and Astronomy, Exotic Carbon Materials |
Colloquium: Department of Physics and Astronomy, Thursday, September 7 at 4:00 PM in Daniel Hall Auditorium, Room 100B, with refreshments beforehand at 3:30 in Room 108 of the Kinard Laboratory of Physics. Exotic Carbon Materials* Professor Peter C. Eklund Department of Physics In the past twenty years, interest in exotic carbons has grown at a remarkable pace. The rush to learn more has been sparked by the discovery of several new forms of highly ordered sp 2 bonded carbons, i.e., spherical carbon (fullerenes) and filamentary carbon (nanotubes) and most recently atom-thick films (graphene). In this Graffin lecture, co-sponsored by the American Carbon Society, I will touch on highlights of our recent research in single-walled carbon nanotubes and graphene that indicate there is still much to discover and learn about these fascinating elemental materials. We concentrate on three recent efforts to understand the following: boron-substitution and its connection with hydrogen storage in nanotubes, changes in physical properties of graphite as the number of layers in the sample approaches “one” (i.e., graphene) and the “Raman antenna” effect in nanotubes. *This research was supported, in part, by the U.S. Dept. of Energy and the U.S. National Science Foundation. |

NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Application Seminar: Learn From A Pro! |
|
In the Graduate School's continuing commitment to make Clemson a top-20 public university, we are offering a Seminar for our graduate students that will guide you through the 2006-2007 NSF Graduate Research Fellowship application process. The seminar series will consist of three 2-hour evening sessions during which you will learn everything you need to know to write competitive fellowship applications. The seminars are three distinct sessions, not the same presentation offered three times. We will cover the basics (eligibility, NSF's Fastlane system, deadlines, etc.). Most important, you will learn what is expected in the three essays (personal, prior experiences, proposed research). You will have the opportunity to write your essays and receive one-on-one comments and editing assistance. The seminar will give you a structured timeframe in which to complete your applications. It will also help you develop essential grant proposal writing skills. The seminar dates are August 31, September 14, and October 5 from 6-8 p.m. in the Student Senate Chambers. Pizza and beverages will be served. We are exploring the possibility that 1-graduate credit can be awarded retroactively for students who complete the Seminar this fall semester. Our plan is to offer this as a regularly-scheduled 1-credit graduate seminar as of Fall semester 2007. The Seminar will be conducted by Valorie Troesch, Assistant Dean of the Graduate School. Valorie has extensive experience working with graduate students who have submitted successful NSF GRF applications. Seminar speakers will include faculty who have served as GRF reviewers and Clemson graduate students who have been awarded the NSF GRF. Currently Clemson has 2 NSF GRF awardees. To be eligible to apply for the NSF GRF, graduate students must not have completed more than 12 months of full-time graduate study. This means that first year graduate students are eligible. In addition, a student can complete 2 academic semesters of graduate study and summer school and still be eligible during the second year of graduate school. Nearly all fields of study are eligible: Life Sciences, Psychology, Mathematical Sciences, Social Sciences, Chemistry, Physics & Astronomy, Engineering, Computer and Information Science & Engineering, and Geosciences. If you have questions, please direct them to Valorie Troesch at vtroesc@clemson.edu. |

ACC Meeting of The Minds |
Clemson will host the first annual "ACC Meeting of The Minds". Research achievements of undergraduates from all twelve ACC universities will be showcased for all to see. "The Graduate School is pleased to support ACC undergraduates in their research efforts. Because research is the backbone of world-class graduate programs like the ones at Clemson and other ACC schools, anything we can do to support and further research at the undergraduate level in turn helps all of the ACC graduate programs recruit and retain top students." This meeting is not only an opportunity for students to present their projects, but also for faculty, graduate students, and staff to participate in a collaborative event focused on undergraduate research. This event will be held: For more information, please click here to visit the event web site. |
