Traci Pawlowski is the first to graduate with a Ph.D. in Genetics as a result of the collaboration between Clemson University and the Greenwood Genetic Center. Traci joined the CU/GGC graduate program in August of 2002. Traci is a non-traditional graduate student, and received undergraduate degrees (B.A. in Psychology and in Biology) from Indiana University. Traci was initially attracted to Clemson because of the collaboration between Clemson University’s Department of Genetics and Biochemistry and the Greenwood Genetic Center. Traci had worked for GGC as a lab technician for 5 years, and when the collaboration began, she was one of the first to join the program. After doing research for others, Traci realized that she wanted to be able to direct her own research. So, the obvious conclusion was to get her Ph.D. She has been mentored by Dr. Anand Srivastava at GGC (http://www.ggc.org/faculty/srivastava.htm) and her research project has been the functional genomics of AGTR2(a receptor on the surface of cells) in the human brain. She will become a Post-Doctorate Fellow at TGen, a private genomics institute in Phoenix, AZ, in the lab of Dr. Matthew Huentelman, where she will study autism proteomics. For more information on this research, click here. After her post-doc, she plans to work in pharmacogenomic research (medicine customized to specific genotypes). Genetics and Biochemistry Graduate Students who want to work at GGC must be in the Ph.D. program and must also be eligible to be teaching assistants.
