Microbiology

MS, PhD

The Department of Biological Sciences offers the MS and PhD degrees in Microbiology. The MS degree is usually completed within two years; the goal of this program is to develop scientists with strong interdisciplinary skills in research design, critical thinking, and communication as well as expertise in a specific research area. The PhD degree is usually completed within four years, and prepares students for careers as research scientists in academic institutions, in research laboratories, or with state, federal, and private agencies.

There are three major emphasis areas available for both the MS and PhD degrees: (1) Cellular and Physiological Microbiology, (2) Microbial Genetics and Molecular Microbiology, and (3) Environmental Microbiology.  This diversity enables the student, to some extent, to tailor the program to fit their own needs and aspirations.
